Today I’m Gonna Try and Change the World

One day recently I heard the song “Today I’m Gonna Try and Change the World” by Johnny Reid on the radio. The context was an interview describing the hopefulness in the fact that Indigenous youth are learning more about their history and being more heard in today’s Canada than even a couple of years ago.

Systems are broken. Privilege exists. How do we help our kids grow up within a balance of feeling safe, carefree and cared for…while also helping them learn about the hurt in the world and what we can do to change it?

My 7-year-old son has been saying with some regularity, “This is the worst day of my life!” I know it is just a way of expressing that he is unhappy about what is happening in the moment. He’s kind of a dramatic kid all around. But we decided to talk about that expression. I told him those are strong words and we talked about how much he has – most importantly – how much love. We talked about how some pretty terrible things happen to people to make a worst day. We talked about the feeling that underlies what he said. He said that the feeling is boredom. So we talked about saying, “I’m bored right now,” instead.

I hope that he felt validated and heard. I also hope that our conversation encouraged him to think about the power of words, and about disparities in the world. And I hope it encouraged him to try and change the world.

May there be peace. May there be awareness. May there be connection. May there be action. May there be change. May there be love.

“Today I’m Gonna Try And Change The World”

By Johnny Reid

Today I’m gonna try and change the world
Gonna take it one day at a time
I’ve made my resolution
I’ve opened up my eyes
Today I’m gonna try and change the world

I’m gonna say hello to my neighbor
Greet him with a smile
Shake the hand of a stranger
Sit and talk for a while
Tell someone I love them
From the bottom of my heart
Today I’m gonna try and change the world

Today I’m gonna try and change the world
Gonna take it one day at a time
I’ve made my resolution
I’ve opened up my eyes
Today I’m gonna try and change the world

Gonna make sure my children
Know there’s a right and wrong
I’ll never turn my back
On those of us who need someone
I’m gonna try to see myself
Through another’s eyes
Today I’m gonna try and change the world

Today I’m gonna try and change the world
Gonna take it one day at a time
I’ve made my resolution
I’ve opened up my eyes
Today I’m gonna try and change the world

Today I’m gonna try and change the world
Today I’m gonna try and change the world
Not for me, but for those I’ll leave behind
I’ve made my resolution
Change it one day at time
Today I’m gonna try and change the world
